“Whether it be professional, personal or spiritual, there is something slightly surreal about finally etching that ‘Dr’ in front of your name and leaving those medical student flashcards in your not so distant past.

It is reasonable to assume that the environment in which your internship is moulded is important, as the people and culture you are immersed in are effectively your tour guides on your year of medical adventure.

The foundations formed during internship are vital for future growth, as they can not only set the scene for your career path, but also give you the skills required to becoming an overall competent and safe healthcare professional…which brings me to a gem in northern

Victoria, situated on the Murray River wrapped in a greenery or orchards and vines.

“My colleagues, including my seniors, have been extremely supportive. The ample opportunities I have been handed, and the ability to work closely with the most senior members of the team are perks that only a regional hospital can offer.”

I have spent the best part of a year in Mildura and I can honestly say it has made me a better person.

Living away from home, I have found a second family in this not so little town. The support I have received from the ground up has allowed me to feel secure and valued as part of the Mildura team, and subsequently given me the confidence to take strides forward in progressing as a junior doctor.

My colleagues, including my seniors, have been extremely supportive. The ample opportunities I have been handed, and the ability to work closely with the most senior members of the team are perks that only a regional hospital can offer.

If I am being totally honest I came to Mildura with a stomach full of butterflies and Google search on what the town had to offer. And so far this year has turned out to be more than I could have ever suspected. Simply put, internship up here has been educational, enjoyable and eye-opening.

As my Google search told me; Mildura is often referred to as the Mediterranean of the outback. And I can’t argue with that, as this town and its people have more than enough to offer to anybody that gives it a chance.”
