Area Mental Health and Wellbeing Services (AMHWS)

The MBPH Area Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (AMHWS) has a range of hospital and community based services.

Short-Term Assessment and Response Team

The Short-Term Assessment and Response Team (START) supports triage, assessment, treatment, care and support for people of all ages who are experiencing crisis or acute mental illness or psychological distress. START supports access to the MBPH Area Mental Health and Wellbeing Service, as well as referral to other services or supports in the community.

Triage and crisis supports available 24 hours a day/7 days a week on:

Inpatient Unit

The MBPH AMHWS Inpatient Unit (Ward 5) is a 14-bed service staffed by skilled and compassionate doctors and mental health clinicians. People who are experiencing acute mental illness and are unable to be supported in a community setting by MBPH may be admitted to Ward 5 for high intensity treatment and care.

In most cases, people requiring an inpatient admission can be supported in Mildura and stay close to their family and friends. In some cases, MBPH may arrange for an admission to a psychiatric unit elsewhere within Victoria. This occurs when someone may be experiencing severe mental illness or when they may be better served in another location due special or extended care needs. An example is referral to specialist Mother and Baby psychiatric inpatient units – such as those in Bendigo or Melbourne.

Decisions to admit to the psychiatric inpatient unit are made collaboratively between the individual, their family and their treating hospital staff - with the needs, values and preferences of the person and their family taken into account.

MBPH offers a range of community-based Mental Health Services including:

  • Infant, Child and Family Services (including 0-11 years and peri-natal)

Prevention & Recovery Care (PARC)

PARCs provide short-term recovery-focussed residential support for people aged 16-64 years of age who are connected to the MBPH Area Mental Health and Wellbeing Service. The Mildura PARC has 10 beds and provides 24/7 support for people experiencing mental illness - either after they have had a stay in hospital  - or as an early intervention to prevent the need for an inpatient admission.

Staying at the Mildura PARC can help to reduce distress and help those leaving hospital to successfully transition back home and into the community.
